About Shatak
The Story Behind Shatak
Shatak is a feature-length film that revisits the 100-year journey of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) — an organization deeply woven into India’s cultural, social, and political fabric, yet often misunderstood.
This film does not seek to persuade.
It seeks to observe, document, and reflect.
Drawing from historical literature, archival material, oral memories, and lesser-known events, Shatak presents a layered narrative of an idea that quietly shaped modern Bharat.
In colonial India, a fiery young boy, Keshav Baliram Hedgewar, grows up refusing to bow before foreign rule, rejecting even school rituals meant to glorify the British Empire. As oppression deepens, his rebellion matures into a disciplined vision for national resurgence.
This resolve gives birth to Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, an organization rooted in unity, character and unwavering devotion to Bharatmata. Through imprisonments, unfounded allegation under fabricated charges, communal turmoil, war and the upheaval of Independence, Hedgewar’s dream of RSS outlives him. The flame is carried forward by his chosen successor, Madhavrao Sadashiv Golwalkar aka Guruji, who expands the movement into a nationwide force.
The film traces the birth of an ideology that reshaped modern India born from the seed of patriotism, nurtured through sacrifice, discipline, and an unyielding faith in the nation.

Film Overview
Shatak is a feature-length cinematic narrative that traces the 100-year journey of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) — from its modest beginnings in a Nagpur lane to its emergence as the world’s largest voluntary organization.
More than a chronicle of events, Shatak explores the ideas, struggles, myths, and transformations that shaped an organization deeply embedded in India’s cultural, social, and political landscape. Often discussed, frequently misunderstood, and rarely examined in depth, the film revisits the story of RSS through facts, historical literature, oral memory, and lesser-known episodes.
The narrative moves fluidly across timelines — from the turbulence of the independence era to quiet village shakhas, from moments of resistance to periods of introspection. It traces the vision of its founder, Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar, and the evolution that followed under subsequent leadership, capturing the ideological and organizational shifts across decades.
Shatak does not aim to persuade or preach. It functions as a truth-seeking mirror, presenting events as they unfolded and allowing viewers to reflect, question, and form their own understanding. Through a blend of archival footage, dramatized reenactments, and documentary realism, the film offers a thoughtful, immersive exploration of an idea that quietly shaped modern Bharat.
Why Now

Because 100 years of an idea deserves to be told.

Because RSS has entered the mainstream —
but its origins, sacrifices, and inner journey remain largely unknown.

Because in the noise of modern politics, it is time to return to the roots — and understand how a quiet cultural revolution shaped the future of Bharat.
The film won’t tell viewers what to believe — it will show what happened, and let them feel its weight
